MONNAR
Monnar, known for his “organic form surrealism”—a combination of the surrealist style of Dali and Hundertwasser’s organic forms, with a hint of Ernst Degasperi’s “meticulous linear strokes’—focuses on the Filipino Diaspora in his new set of works. Mostly Monnar’s works consist of colorful and interconnected and interrelated images, forming a single image. Monnar often explores darker subjects—societal, economic, and political challenges. His early pieces, with their anatomical distortions and abstract forms, evoke the spirit of Picasso and Degasperi, while also drawing parallels to the unsettling imagery of Hieronymus Bosch. The contrast between these intense themes and the vivid backgrounds creates a striking visual irony. In his recent works, Monnar shifts focus to depicting themes like the "money tree" or "tree of life," further expanding his artistic technique. Monnar has earned five Jurors’ Choice nods in the prestigious yearly art tilt of the Artist Association of the Philippines. He was also chosen one of the 50 finalists in the Phillip Morris Group of Companies Philippine Art Awards. He has exhibited abroad and had a solo art exhibition in Paris last September, 2017 at Gallerie Menouar where french collectors pursued his art. His works were exhibited in New York/Manhattan in April 2019.
